Team Building Activity: Lava Island

Cebu Teambuilding Facilitators Network loves to employ mind-boggling activities. Activities that has the potential to frustrate because we believe learning takes place when individuals and teams decide look for solutions to address their frustrations. Here is an activity we refer to as Lava Island.

We need:

A big space for the group
A valuable object in possession of each participant

Number of Particpants:

5 to 15 participants (adjustments may be done)

Objective:

To get all the valuable objects scattered around the "island". The "island" is the space where everyone in all the team members must stand inside at all times. The facilitator draws a circle on the ground to indicate this.

Instructions:

  1. Participants aren’t allowed to have physical contact outside the "Island".
  2. Using of nearby obstructions as a support are prohibited
  3. Using other objects as extensions are also prohibited

Here are a few suggested debriefing questions:
  1. How did you manage to get the objects?
  2. How did the team manage to be successful?
  3. What can the team improve on?
  4. What else did the team do to accomplish the objective?

Now ask yourself, “if I were there, what would I do?” Better yet, why not experience it yourself together with your team? Isn’t that a better answer to the question? If you agree, look no further. CTFN can take care of that for you and so much more.
