Looking Back at the 1st Petron Team Building Facilitated by CTFN
It was in 2014 when a manager from Petron Corporation got in touch with Cebu Teambuilding Facilitators Network founder Thadz Engaling. CTFN was still known as Cebu Teambuilding Services then. To date, CTFN has handled 2 team building programs for the same Petron team, the last of which happened on 25 June 2016 at the Costabella Tropical Beach Hotel in Buyong, Lapulapu City, Cebu, Philippines.
Petron Team Building 2014
That first team building program engagement for Petron happened in June of 2014. The venue of the event was at Rancho Cancio in Adlaon, Cebu City, Philippines also known as the Adlaon Farm House. It was a private rest house available for rent to friends and acquaintances. To date, that was the only team building program CTFN facilitated in the venue. There were 6 managers in attendance that time.
Facilitators
Thadz led a team of 5 facilitators for Petron's 2014 team building program. Ably assisting him were long-time CTFN affiliate Clint Fuentes and 3 senior facilitators from the 22nd batch of the Facilitators Circle at the time namely Joyce Cabreros, Joe Aperdo, and Reba Palang.
Team Building Activities for Petron
The Petron team of managers went through activities that geared mostly towards more effective and efficient communication and accountability. The activities were mostly play-based as is a usual program done by CTFN. Debriefing was done post-activity and post-program. Many of the activities were modified and customized to better address the team's issues and concerns.
Helium Ring
Most CTFN team building programs start with an activity that allows teams to become aware of their working and relational dynamics. Most of the time, we use the helium ring activity for smaller groups like this lean Petron team.

Message Relay
Once settled and with the team already aware of their dynamics, we proceed to such topics as improving communication. For Petron, we employed the good old message relay as a communication activity but tweaked it a little. Instead of directly speaking, the team members were to communicate with parts of their body without any 2 members utilizing the same part.

Minefield
Another communication activity we employed was minefield. Additionally, this activity also tested one's ability to follow instructions, to lead, and give out clear directions. This was the activity that consumed most time, the most frustrating activitiyfor the team, but also one that opened up lots of learning. This was also a time when CTFN was still using blindfolds for some of its activities. Sometime in 2015, CTFN totally eliminated blindfolds from its activities for the reason that without blindfolds, there are more opportunities to initiate learning.

Ball Game or Warp Speed
Since this was a management team and leaders need to constantly improve results, a learning exercise to that effect was done. Ball game or warp speed challenges the mind to think of better ways to improve constantly and not settling too soon on what one thinks is already their best effort. It creates a paradigm shift of sorts.
This first engagement with a Petron management team provided learning opportunities not just for the program participants but also for the facilitators.
