Why Team Building?: Planning and Prioritization

One tangible result of a team building program is for a team and its members to realign its goals, creating strategies, and drafting action plans. A team building program therefore can be used as a session for goal setting, strategic planning, and action planning. Team building programs also allow an atmosphere where efficient meetings on goal setting, strategic planning, and action planning can be done.

Goal Setting

Teams need to set a direction. Goals need to be set to get a team moving towards a certain direction. These goals must follow the SMART acronym for goal-setting. That means goals must be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound.

Strategic Planning

Goals set a vision of what a team wants to achieve. To enable the team to work for their goals, it is important that they create strategies on how to get to where they want to go. Strategic planning prods a team to create enabling strategies that will allow the team to work on their goals. A helpful tool that can be used here is the OGSM tool used by Procter & Gamble. OGSM is an acronym for Objectives, Goals, Strategies, Measures.

Action Planning

Specific action plans may also be drafted as part of a team building program. Action plans identifies the specific requirements needed for rolled out strategies such as the amount of cash needed, the kind of expertise required, people that must be involved, the necessary equipment and materials, systems that need to be put in place, and the space requirement. Gantt charts are also a big help here.
